VINCENT RIVER
by Philip Ridley

Set in the East End of London, this moving, lyrical and joltingly funny drama is about a bereaved mother and the anguished young man who crashes into her life. In the aftermath of a hate crime, Anita and Davey search for the answer to the simplest and most impossible of questions: Why? Vincent River plays cat-and-mouse with its audience, dispensing truths, half-truths and falsehoods in strategically staggered increments.

" ...beautifully acted ... it's a good guess that Roberts-Birch and Chandler have developed a shorthand with each other. Their interactions are as well-timed as dueling pianos, harmonic in certain areas while fiercely independent in others. Even then, they're always on the same emotional plane ... (Ridley) allows for well-timed silences for reflection and thought-gathering, and Armstrong is carefully considerate of these moments. She also gives her actors an appropriate amount of stage business and moves them on the Darryl Clement's small but striking set in an organic fashion. Nothing here feels stagy or actorly." Mark Lowry, TheaterJones.com

"Philip Ridley’s hour-long one-act has its share of dramatic surprises, but none more effective than the performances of Roberts-Birch and Chandler ... This revival, in conjunction with Uptown Players, gives a whole new audience the chance to marvel in this wonderful piece ..." Arnold Wayne Jones, Dallas Voice

"Written by Philip Ridley, directed by Robin Armstrong, with wonderful set design by Darryl Clement, the production features an outstanding acting duo in Sue Roberts-Birch and James Chandler in the roles of Anita and Davey, respectively." Buster Spiller, www.examiner.com

"It does what theater, I think, should do, entertain, enlighten, and get you talking. Vincent River is a great alternative offering to the standard fare, and you should grab a few friends and see how intriguing it is." Clyde Berry, John Garcia's THE COLUMN

"... the performance was superb ... director Robin Armstrong put together a heck of a production (which was also graced by the best designs seen in this year's Out of the Loop) ... a great ride -- one of the highlights of the 11-day festival, for sure." Lawson Taitte, The Dallas Morning News

" ... an engrossing emotional journey as layer by layer two damaged souls reveal common ground until the final revelation that intertwines their lives forever." Cathy O'Neal, TheaterJones.com

"a powerful piece of sometimes chilling theater ... " Will Arbery, Renegade Bus
